Gujarat has always punched above its weight in Indian sports, but 2026 marks a turning point. The state government's ₹2,400 crore sports infrastructure investment is bearing fruit, with five new world-class facilities set to open before the year is out.
The centrepiece is the Ahmedabad Multi-Sport Complex, a 45,000-capacity venue that will host international cricket, football and athletics. Designed by the same firm behind the Melbourne Cricket Ground's recent renovation, it promises to be one of Asia's finest sporting venues.
But it's not just about the big stadiums. Grassroots facilities are being built in every district, with particular focus on kabaddi, wrestling and athletics — sports where Gujarat has historically produced champions.
